Orel Loland (Ed) Owens Jr, 82, St Joseph, Missouri died Saturday, January 21, 2017, at his home in St. Joseph.
He was born November 19, 1934 in Logan, Kansas, the son of Orel and Goldie Sanford Owens.
He was a 1954 graduate of Logan Public Schools and attended college in California. During the 1950's Ed was an amateur baseball player for the Kansas City Blues.
Ed proudly served his country aboard a carrier with the U.S. Navy Aviation Fighter Squadron Twenty Four, NAS, Alameda, CA. After his military service he went to work for the Lockheed Missile Program, where he worked on the electrical re-entry system for the Minuteman Missile and the Apollo. After being laid off, he worked in construction for a time before moving to Oregon. He worked as a deputy sheriff and City Police Detective in Lake Oswego, Oregon and installed many 911 systems in the Portland, Oregon area throughout his 30 years of service.
On November 7, 1980, Ed married Diane Lee Swanson in Portland, Oregon. She preceded him in death on June 26, 2010.
On May 17, 2013, Ed married Mary Louise Noel, in Maryville, Missouri. They made their home in St. Joseph.
He was a member of St. Gregory Barbarigo Catholic Church in Maryville.
Ed was preceded in death by his parents, first wife, Diane, son, Robert Duane Owens and brother, Theron K. "Pep" Owens.
Surviving him are wife, Mary Noel Owens, of their home in St. Joseph, four step-children: Donna Jean (Robert) Stromer, Fairview, Oregon, Julie Noel, St. Joseph, Christie (Jason) Ebersole, Florissant, MO and Melanie (Brian) Noel, Savannah, MO, five grandchildren: Autumn Stromer, Portland, OR and Robert Stromer III, Vancouver, WA, Charles Ebersole, Florissant, MO and Malia and Alexa Noel, Savannah, MO, brother, Boyce Eugene "Pete" Owens and wife Antonia "Toni", Groveland, CA.sister-in-law Dolly Owens and three nephews.
A visitation will be held from 10-11 AM, preceding the Memorial Mass at 11AM Saturday, January 28, 2017 at St. Gregory Barbarigo Catholic Church, Maryville, MO.
Inurnment will take place at a later date at the Pleasant View Cemetery, Logan, Kansas.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be sent to Fraternal Order of Police (FOP)#3, 3005 Pear Street, St. Joseph, Missouri or the Geriatric Clinic in Memory of Ed Owens, Dwight D. Eisenhower VA Med Center, 4101 S. 4th Street Trafficway, Leavenworth, KS 66048.
