Marvin Sumy, 93, of Maryville, Missouri formerly of Skidmore, passed away on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, at his home surrounded by his family.
Marvin was born on April 7, 1933, at home in Sheridan, Missouri to William and Neva (Sparks) Sumy. He was a 1951 graduate of Pickering High School.
Between graduation and 1958 he worked for the Cudahay Creamery, Rancho Del Rio, Ships Service and went to work for his dad in 1959 at Sumy Oil Company. He purchased the service station and fuel services and ran Sumy Oil Company until he retired in 2010. After he sold the station, he worked for the city of Skidmore until he retired from that in 2019.
He was a member of the Skidmore United Methodist Church, former Skidmore United Methodist Church Trustee, retired member of Skidmore volunteer Fire Department, Skidmore Fire Department Board, former Skidmore City Council member, Maryville Masonic Lodge 470 AF & AM, member of Skidmore and Maryville Order of Eastern Star.
Marvin loved bird hunting, fishing at ponds and at the Nodaway River and he always had a garden.
Marvin was a devoted husband to Geraldine for over 72 years, a persistent young man who won her over with a well-timed movie invitation and long horseback rides down muddy roads to see her. He was a steady, hardworking presence – running Sumy Oil Company for decades and continuing to “volunteer” long after retirement rather than truly slow down. As a father he was patient but firm, the kind of man whose quiet, seldom-raised voice still commanded a room and he found ways to teach his kids real lessons through everyday moments, like FFA pig projects and rabbit-wrangling. He had an infectious smile, an ornery streak, and a soft spot for kids – handing out candy at the station and ice cream to his grandkids. Above all, he was remembered as generous, loyal, and community-minded: a man who never met a stranger, never spoke ill of others, and made sure no one around him went without. He will truly be missed. And for the record, he still has your nose!
He is survived by his wife of 72 years Geraldine E. (McAmis) Sumy. They were united in marriage on November 1, 1953, at the Pickering Methodist Church. Additional survivors include their children, son, Robert M. (Rita) Sumy, their grandchildren, Braton, Braona, Mehki, Zaphfyr; granddaughter, Amy Derr and her children, Kelby Derr, Avery Derr; granddaughter, Wendi (Jim) Godwin, and their children, Clint (Katie) Brummett, Kara Godwin and Lilah Godwin; granddaughter; Rachel (Steve) Julo and their children, Izzy Julo, and Landon Julo; Daughter, Pamela (Mike) Wallace; grandson, Andy (Sarah) Woods and their children, Lane Woods, Courtney Woods; granddaughter, Halea Woods; step-grandchildren, Becky (Mike) Hines, Kali, Sarah (Bill) Miller, and Issac; sisters, Betty Hankins, Ramona Harrington, Carolyn (Roger) Weston, Linda Shupp and Rita Wells and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, father and mother-in-law, Bob and Geneva McAmis, sister, Mary (Orville) Florea, sister, Barbara (Stephen) Jackson, sister, Shirley (Raymond) Endres, brother, Ronald (Evelyn) Sumy, brother-in-law, Dean (Sharon) McAmis, brother-in-law, Stephen Shupp, brother-in-law, Virgil Hankins, brother-in-law, Jarrold Herrington, brother-in-law, Bill Wells.
Funeral Services will be held at 11am on Monday, August 24th at Price Funeral Home. Burial will follow the service at Hillcrest Cemetery in Skidmore, Missouri. The family will gather with friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
In memory of Marvin, his family suggests memorials be made in care of Skidmore Fire Department, or Skidmore United Methodist Church.
