Obituary

George Eugene Rose passed away on October 17, 2024. He was born April 30, 1936, in Overland, Missouri (St. Louis County) where he grew up.

Preceding him in death are his parents, Charles Glenwood and Mabel C. (née Davenport) Rose; sisters, Laverne (Art) Trampe, Gloria Tevis; Virginia "Ginnie" (Jack) Gierten; Janet (Bob) Powers, and a brother, Glenwood Rose (Jeanne Bush). He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Rose Carolyn (née Ventling) Rose, their daughter, Gabrielle Lauren Curti (Frank Curti), and grandson, Everett Noel Curti. He is survived by five nieces and eight nephews.

George was baptized in the Overland Disciples of Christ Church. As a youth, 'Eugene' as he was always called at home, was active in a softball league, played St. Louis style stickball in his neighborhood, was a Boy Scout, and traveled many road trips with his family. He loved his pets, particularly his dogs. His gift in art was encouraged, as he fondly recounted, by his art teacher at Ritenour High School where he attended.

George earned Fine Art degrees in painting and drawing from Washington University, St. Louis (BFA), and University of Colorado, Boulder (MFA). He undertook further studies in art at the Yale Summer School (Norfolk, CT), and the New York Studio School (New York City).

George's passion for painting and drawing persisted up to the end of his life. His studio practice and visual philosophy dynamically informed his thirty-five years of teaching studio art, art appreciation and art history. He was beloved by his students, and for some, he continued as lifelong mentor and friend. George started his teaching career at Southwest Missouri State University (now Missouri State University), and later at Boston University. He spent seventeen years teaching at Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville before retiring in 2000. Along the way, he served as visiting artist-instructor at Indiana University (Bloomington), Dartmouth College, American University, Queens College (Caumsett, Long Island), the New York Studio School, and the Chautauqua Institution (upstate New York), and others.

George's paintings and drawings have been shown in numerous local, regional and national exhibitions with awards in competitive juried shows and participation in many invitational solo and group exhibits. His most notable inclusions were in exhibitions at the National Academy of Design, and the American Academy of Arts and Letters, both in New York City.

A devoted companion and husband to his wife, Rose, their relationship was also one of shared joy in their love of great art and of mutual artistic admiration, as attested to by his eagerness to exhibit with her in several joint shows. He was as deeply devoted to his daughter, Gabrielle. He provided steadfast, gentle guidance and care through every phase of her life. He was a very dear Grandfather and Father-in-Law. George was mild-tempered, soft-spoken and kind, a man of quiet intensity, great integrity, immensely patient and generous with others. He will be fondly remembered for his breadth of knowledge of history and geography, and his impressive memory for past events and experiences. Outside of painting, his love of classical music was lifelong and deeply meaningful. In the years following his retirement, George dealt with many health issues with grace and astonishing perseverance.
