George Roosevelt Gayler, 95 of Maryville, Missouri died at his home of natural causes Wednesday, June 14, 2017.
He was born September 1, 1921 in Canton, Illinois, the son of George Wilson Gayler and Mary (Owens) Gayler.
George and Barbara Helen (Beer) Gayler were married June 11, 1944 in Abingdon, Illinois.
A veteran of World War II, George was comissioned as a 1st Lieutenant in the US Army Air Corps and served as a pilot in the 27th Troop Carrier Squadron. During this time he flew missions at the India-Burma China offensive. For his service he was awarded the Air Medal, the Distinguished Flying Cross, the American Theater Ribbon, three Bronze Battle Stars, two Overseas Service Bars, and a Victory Medal.
George earned his BS Degree in History in 1946 from Western Illinois University; his MA and PhD degrees from Indiana University, receiving his MA in 1947 and his PhD in 1955. He was a retired Professor after many years of employment at Northwest Missouri State University. For many years he enjoyed serving as the official scorekeeper for Bearcat Basketball games.
He was a member of Maryville First United Methodist Church, Host Lions, HUMP Pilot's Association, Nodaway County Retired Teachers, Tuesday Forum, Distinguished Flying Cross Society and Nodaway County Historical Society.
Preceding him in death were his parents and daughter Janet S. Gayler.
George is survived by his wife, Barbara Gayler of the home in Maryville, son, Richard (Nancy) Gayler, Kennesaw, GA. three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be 6-7 PM Friday, June 16, 2017 at Price Funeral Home, Maryville.
Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Saturday, June 17th at the Maryville First United Methodist Church. George's body will be moved to the church one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow in Miriam Cemetery,
Memorial contributions may be sent to the George R. Gayler Scholarship at NWMSU or Maryville First United Methodist Church.
