Doris
Nagel
Jan 7, 1937 — Feb 4, 2024
Burlington Junction
Doris Nagel, 87, of Burlington, Missouri passed away on Sunday, February 4, 2024 at her home.
Chances are you didn't know Doris--not because she wasn't friendly, but because we were both so exhausted trying to keep our jobs in Kansas City and simultaneously, on weekends and during summer vacation, trying to build our house here that we didn't have time to be "sociable." Doris had lots of academic achievements and an illustrious career as a Director at Midwest Institute. There are also plenty of names to enter under the rubric "she is survived by", but in this short space, if I were pressed to explain to people "who was Doris really?", I would tell about the midsummer morning, years ago, when a local farmer and his eight year old son came to help me with something on our still not quite finished house.
It was a hot day, and the farmer had parked his pick-up in the shadow of our house, widows of the truck rolled down, while I went back into the house to fetch something we would need for our task. Meanwhile I could hear Doris above, in the kitchen, talking to Georgie and Scampi. When I went back to the truck I came around from behind on the passenger's side and I heard the boy say to his father, "I like the way she talks to those dogs."
That explains as well as I can, who Doris was--a beautiful person, inside and out, the Light of my Life, the best thing that ever happened to me.
