Betty Lou
Miller
Jun 29, 1933 — May 27, 2026
Maryville
Betty Lou Miller, age 92, passed away surrounded by the love of those who had become her family throughout her many years with Nodaway County Services.
Betty was more than a resident — she was the heart of a home, a constant presence, and a light in the lives of everyone who knew her.
Betty was born on June 29, 1933, in Pike County, Missouri, to Dorothy (Gunn) Miller and Thomas Miller. In 1942, she moved to Marshall, Missouri, where she lived for many years before making Maryville her home in October of 1984. Betty worked at NoCoMo Industries for several years prior to her retirement and remained active throughout her life. She enjoyed bowling, attending church, participating in university activities, and spending time with the many people who loved her dearly.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents and her beloved sister, Flo. Though much of Betty's early life remains unknown, one thing was always clear — she deeply loved and remembered the people she had lost. She often spoke of friends and family who had passed before her, gently placing her hands together in prayer and pointing toward the sky while saying, "My friend up there." Her faith and love for those she missed stayed with her throughout her life.
For over four decades, Betty lived in her home through Nodaway County Services. The staff who cared for Betty quickly became her family, and she became theirs. Her presence shaped generations of staff and housemates alike. She taught patience, resilience, kindness, humor, and unconditional love simply by being herself. Her impact on the lives around her cannot be measured. Betty found joy in life's simple moments and creative passions. She was always busy helping others — washing dishes, taking out the trash, folding clothes, and helping care for her housemates.
Betty had a giving spirit and rarely made something without wanting to share it. She loved creating bead necklaces and crocheted rugs to give to those she cared about. She also enjoyed decorating her space with pictures and keepsakes that reflected the memories and people she treasured most.
Those who knew Betty will remember her as incredibly kind, fiercely independent, generous beyond measure, and wonderfully stubborn. Very little could slow Betty down. Even through hardship and loss, she continued to live fully, love deeply, and bring joy to the people around her.
While her passing leaves an immeasurable emptiness in many hearts, there is comfort in knowing she is no longer in pain and has been reunited with the loved ones and friends she missed so dearly over the years. Betty's life was one of perseverance, compassion, creativity, and connection. She leaves behind a legacy of love that will continue to live on in every life she touched. Betty Lou Miller will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever cherished.
