Obituary for Betty Affolter Weichinger (Affolter)

Betty Weichinger

On Saturday, May 11, 2019, Betty Affolter Weichinger, age 91 of Maryville, put on her blue dress and took her “sailor” by the hand to go to her heavenly “get acquainted” dance. Betty was born on June 18, 1927 in Kansas City MO to Clyde and Myra Olsen Affolter.

After graduating from Plattsburg MO High School, Betty traveled to Maryville MO to attend Northwest Missouri State. She received a 2-year teaching certificate and returned to her hometown of Plattsburg to teach in two rural K-8 one room schools where she was known to her students as Miss Betty. She also taught 3rd grade in Cameron MO.

During her first year at NW, she attended a “get acquainted” dance and met her husband, Ted Weichinger. They were married just shy of 66 years before his death in 2014. They are the parents of 3 children: Sheryl (Terry) Buholt, David, and Sara Beth (George) Duff all of Maryville. There are also 8 grandchildren , 19 great-grandchildren, many young friends who knew her as “gramma-great,” and her many new friends at Parkdale Manor. Other survivors include sister in-laws Rachel Smith of Bellingham WA and Marjorie Roberts of Green Bay WI, and brother in-law Lloyd Weichinger of Waxhaw NC. Besides her parents and husband, Betty was pre-deceased by a brother Dr. Robert Affolter and an infant sister, Vera Maxine.

Betty was first and always a loving and supportive wife, mother and grandma. She was a Sunday School teacher and served as church secretary at the church she loved, First Presbyterian of Maryville. Betty also was a Cub Scout and Brownie Scout leader, room mother for all 3 children. She enjoyed family camping and fishing trips, especially to Colorado, gardening and canning her fresh vegetables, supporting her family’s activities and was a Bearcat fan.

Betty was a member of the 1st Presbyterian Church of Maryville, and the Levis and Laces Square Dance Club.

Services will be at 2:00 Tuesday, May 14th, 2019 at the 1st Presbyterian Church in Maryville. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery, Maryville. The family will meet friends at the church 1 hour prior to the service.
